Formed in August 1996, SMS is one of the oldest online gaming teams. We've never retired, hibernated, or taken a vacation: it's been continuous operation all the way, baby! Steel Maelstrom welcomes players of all skill levels, and has provisions to support both casual and hardcore gamers. Individuals whose applications are accepted by SMS become Trainees: consider them members-in-training. Trainees do not become full members until they complete a minimum 2-week probationary period and pass a qualification test. These tests vary from unit to unit. Retests are permitted every two weeks for up to two months; waivers may be granted for exceptionally motivated individuals. As of September 10, 2001, a minimum age requirement has been incorporated into the application process. Prospective members must be at least 14 years of age; this requirement is in light of certain laws currently in place within the United States regarding the collection of personal information from minors.
