SMS Movie Update!
Ok all. we didn't talk too much about the movie last night during the practice, we were all too eager to start gibbing! However, I did talk with Dizzy last night, it wasn't anything serious about the movie, but we were just pondering possible love triangles for the SMS movie! But I won't get into that, too silly! Anyway, this morning, I think we all decided that we are most likely going to write an actual script for the SMS movie. We'll have a small plot, good music, and some great action. A-Wal will be writing most of the script along with help from some other SMS members to be named and myself! We don't have a due date for this yet, it probably won't be done before September 8th though. This will be very difficult to accomplish considering we have to first write a good script and then fully learn how to use the Keygrip2 utility. The members in the movie will so far be the main Senior Staff and any other SMS memeber who can contribute to this project. We are considering to include some of the "regulars" on the SMS DM server to participate, however, that decision has not been finalized as of yet. I'll keep you posted on any new developments as they arise.
- A new version of Ping Plotter has been released. I downloaded it this morning and I must say, it is an extremly useful utility to see the hops the server is taking. So if your ever lagging on a server and you don't know why, download Ping Plotter and find out! My main lag is at CAnet for some reason, also, the servers are using ADSL! I will probably get ADSL when it arrives in the Toronto area!
- As some of you may have noticed, the SMS CTF is password protected. This is because last night SMS was practicing there, and I have no idea how to Un-Password protect it. If anyone knows, please tell me and i'll do it immediately. This will be remedied soon hopefully anyway!
- I am still not sure when SMS will be accepting battles from other clans. I know one thing though, it will be VERY soon.
- If anyone has any comments or questions e-mail me!

Clan Steel MaelStrom Moive Update
Popularity for the idea for the SMS movie has grown considerably over the past 24 hours. We are even pondering possible plots for the movie, and not just gonna make it a promo, but actually making it have a nice, small, plot. One of the idea's below was sent to SMS by Sgt.A-Wal:
-- Ok, this is a CTF idea where our enemy
is a team made up of all the standard Q2 creatures. It's based on
the first CTF map, and everyone would start off dead including the
enemy. Then the entire enemy team spawns, and we could show clips
from several places on the map and from several different angles.
Then WE spawn one at a time in different locations. What I vision
is us starting off as a pile of gibs, and then doing a reverse death
where we spawn back to life. Possible? Anyhow, then we regroup
in our base, when all of a sudden several flyers buzz in doing
recon escorted by an icarus. The icarus' task is to get the flag
if possible, and if not then to take as many of us out as it can
while trying. The flyers separate the group, leaving two to guard
the flag. One gets killed and the other struggles to hold back
the icarus with his only weapon, a blaster. The flyers go down,
but it's too late. The icarus has killed the second guard, and
is on its way back with the flag. Now starts the battle, not only
to get back our own flag before it is captured, but to eventualy
infiltrate the well guarded enemy base and capture the flag, winning
a victory for mankind.
-- more to come when it popes into my head --
This is just one of the possible plot lines that we are coming up with. We will discuss this more tonight at the SMS practice, I'll post some news about what we may have come up with. You can e-mail a suggestion to ME and I'll forward them to the rest of the clan. Thanks a lot!

Clan Steel MaelStrom Movie?!
Yup, you read right. Violator, Kreth, and myself might be working on an SMS Promo movie. We'll be working with Keygrip 2 (first we outta figure out how to use the damn thing, it crashed on Vio and myself pretty bad already!). We'll try and complete it before the end of August.
- Second, a really cool and interesting pic has been placed on the SMS Pic of the Day section. Definetly one worth the look! Thanks Ballistix for the submission!

Roster Changes:
I fully agree with Violator on that note. Dizzy should definetly be allowed back in, we need female players, and on a plus side, she is a great player and a really nice person! Also, some more estrogen wants to join SMS. The all popular Amy from the DM server wants to be a part of Steel MaelStrom. I fully support Dizzy and Amy.

Well talking with Dizzy on the weekend.....fellow member that had to leave due to moving and ohter reasons, she wants to come back to SmS and I think it would be very good for the Clan to accept her back in as we should have some more FEMALES in the clan....what does everyone else think.....ACE?Rant?

Re: `Don't shoot me, I'm typing' skin
I don't know about you, but this reminds me of that old wolfenstein clone, Rise of the Triad. The one where the baddies would fall on their knees and beg for their worthless, pixellated lives. Now maybe it's just me, but the words, "Please don't shoot me," bring out my sadistic, anti-social side. Those who whine about getting shot while they are fiddling with their keyboard need to learn to type faster.
Don't get angry, get even.

Hey, tired of being gibbed when your typing? While this guy put together a little add-on where when you press "t" to type, it puts a blind fold on the skin and a "Don't shoot Me!" phrase on the players chest. Now finally people won't complain about being gibbed while typing. This site can be found HERE, happy fragging!.

LAG ISSUE
- The reason that I and some other people are getting lag I think is because Sprint is upgrading their system, and several hops go through Sprint Canada, hence, causing lag. So anyone using Sprint Canada as an ISP will periodictly experience lag between 450-1500 for several hours. Unfortunaetly I am using Sprint Canada. This issue will hopefully be resolved soon! Thanx! BTW, here's the Davia link again, I think I botched the last link up: Davia!

Gentle Reminder:
Just a reminder that many people are on holidays in the next week or 2 so don't expect a ton of people out at practice.....and there have been lots of COMPLAINTS lately about lag in the servers. I must agree it is getting worse and Tempest was at about a 500+ ping!
Well if Davia would become part of our clan ...........that would rock she is very sweet......and we need some women in here!

- New Voodoo1 Refrence Drivers have been released. Check it out if you have a voodoo1 board.
- BFG/Grenade Jump... Jeez, I'd love to see it, but when I type in demomap grenbfg.dm2, it don't work for me! Help Tempest out here folks!

100% Nothing To Do With Quake:
Those of you old enough to remember back to the dark days before video arcades may recall that there were few gaming alternatives to conventional sports such as baseball, football and basketball. Soccer was still a funny game played by Europeans and some schoolchildren, and pinball was but a sad attempt at coin-operated entertainment. But there was one game that occupied the hearts and minds of children and adults alike; a game that has carried on into the present day, even as pinball machines fall apart, baseball players go on strike and the United States fails to field a World Cup soccer team worth a shit. Find out more about this fabulous sport on The Official Rock Paper Scissors Strategy Guide homepage.

Tactics:
I don't pay much attention to the Quake2 demos and "movies" that come out, but this one sounded so interesting I bothered to download it...and wasn't disappointed. Download this whack-ass demo to see some freak use a combination grenade/BFG jump that takes him from the bottom of "The Edge" all the way to the top.
Posted 8:51 EST by CPT Rantage
Alliance News:
Tonight the SMS command staff has voted in favor of an Alliance with Clan of the Camper (CotC), a large clan that has proven itself to be not only skilled Quake2 players, but practitioners of good sportsmanship and foes of simpletons and Rules Nazis who feel a need to dictate how you and I play the game.
That, plus they've got a kick-ass website.
Steel Maelstrom has, and will continue to support tactics of all kinds...including "camping", sniping, BFG use and any other technique that has been made available to all players without the use of cheats or additional software.

- PC Games has an interesting article about the upcoming engines that'll be used in '99. The system requirments for Prey for crazy, your gonna need atleast a PII 266Mhz with 64Megs of Ram to run Prey. I think I'll just stick with Duke Forever when it comes out!
- On another note, couple of really intertesting Quake2 MODS have been released in the past week. First off, Capture! has been released. They say it puts DM, CTF, and RA2 all in one, I have my doubts about that though, I'll give it a shot tonight.
- PaintBall 2.0 was released few days ago, looks to be a very promising MOD. For some stupid reason, you have to download the maps seperately. Why not just include the maps in first ZIP you have to download??
- Catch the Chicken 1.4 released.

- Version 5.41 of mIRC, probably the most popular IRC client, has been released. You can download it from the mIRC homepage.
- For you Doom diehards out there: version 4.0 of Ultra Doom Starter is out. It gives you a front-end in which to start Doom 1 or 2 with the various flags and options in the comfort and safety of Windows 95/98 or NT. You can download it from The Ultra Doom Starter Homepage or directly from this link.

Although one could make a case for putting this under "Tactics", the The Bind has posted a Quake configuration for left-handed players, in addition to what appears to be a healthy amount of configs for all kinds of mods and maneuvers. If you're not quite sure what a .cfg file is or how to make your own, this is probably a site you'll want to visit on your way to total enlightenment. Or something like that, Grasshopper.

New Software:
Hey, glad to see that this is running. I'll probably be posting most of the stuff on this news page, I'll try not to make it like Blue's News though...I'll try. Anyway...
DirectX 6.0 is Released..
This is a must download if you play anything! Go to Blue's for the link. Microsoft boasts that it'll speed up Hardware acceloration by 60% (I doubt that).
Changing Maps on SMS Server
Ok, when I want to change a map, I do it like RA2 style... I'll take a vote. If 2 or more people agree to a specific map, and that I agree upon, I'll switch it, no harm in that. A lot of people on the SMS server know that routine by now.
Quake2 3.17 annoying Bug...
I noticed the most annyoing bug ever in Quake2 3.17, hard to describe though. Sometimes, when I'm running (usually around a cornor), I'll suddenly be placed back to where I was 5 seconds ago! This has been happening more lately, I got gibbed a couple of times from this, has anyone experience this?
Hopefully, in 3.18 (which is in the making according to Zoid) it will be rememedied.
SMS Fragboard...
Some of you might (non-SMS members) have been wondering why the SMS Fragboard dies on June 01 at 5:00:07 am, well it's because ID Software hasn't released any source codes since the 3.14 patch, the Fragboard needs a source code to live, It'll be out of it's coma once the source code is out.
Duke Forever Goin' good
Read on Blue's that DNF is going good after the engine change, that's GOOD. I was a big Duke fan for 2 years till Quake2 arrived. Can't wait to play DNF, too bad they switched engines!!
Alright, I'll make another post later today or tomarrow morning!
